What is a PADI Discover Scuba Diving?

PADI Discover Scuba Diving is for anyone curious to know what it is like underwater but is not a certified diver yet.

It’s the chance to try Scuba Diving and discover how beautiful are the reefs around Siquijor while surrounded by tropical colorful fish and sea turtles.

It’s an introductory diving experience, a total immersion in new sensations like the absence of gravity, freedom of movements and effortless breathing underwater.

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving is not a certification.

If you want to go further and become a certified diver, you can get your PADI Open Water certification.

Can I participate to the Discover Scuba Diving program without any prior experience?

How deep do we go for a Discover Scuba Diving?

Maximum depth for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving is 12mts.

This is a limit, not a goal to achieve.

If you feel comfortable and your instructor feels you are confident enough, you will be able to go down to 12 meters. If you feel more comfortable shallower, there is also plenty to see at 4 to 5 meters!

What is the program of your Discover Scuba Diving in Siquijor?

In order to fully enjoy this first experience, it is important not to rush it, and that’s the reason we do not go through any kind of shortcut. You will follow a few distinct steps:

Safety briefing and equipment check

First, you will be given a good briefing about diving basics and safety. You will also get to know your diving equipment.

Shallow water preactice

Then, you will practice a few skill in a confined environment in order to get used to the diving equipment and get comfortable breathing underwater.

Reef exploration with your PADI instructor

Finally, you go for a dive on the reef full of life to observe amazing corals, turtles and all kind of multicolor tropical fish.

Second dive – optional

SIf you enjoyed it, you can go for a second dive on a different dive site. This time, no long briefing or skills, just fun!

Calm water and very good visibility

One of the best thing about Siquijor for beginner divers is that the sea is very quiet here. There is usually no current, making it ideal for a peaceful and easy experience. Underwater visibility is usually 20+ meters, making it perfect for a serene and breathtaking experience from the very first moment.

Protected reef perfect for beginners

The reef around Siquijor is particularly healthy. This is thanks to the low volume of tourism and the numerous amount of marine sanctuaries like Tubod marine sanctuary or Maite marine sanctuary.

Sea turtles, corals and colorful tropical fish

Despite its chill vibe and being away from mass tourism, Siquijor hosts an impressive marine life just as good as other famous diving spots. Here, beginners can easily observe:

Who can do a try dive?

Everyone can try diving as long as you meet a few criteria.

Minimum age

To enroll in a PADI Discover Scuba Diving, you need to be at least 10 years old.

Physical condition

No prior experience is required, but you need to be in good physical condition (please check the medical questionnaire).

Diving standards allow for each instructor to go with four divers at the same time for a discover scuba diving. This means that your instructor has been train to do so safely.

However, our experience has told us that this ratio would not allow for ideal conditions so we decided to divide it by half.

FAQ – Discover Scuba Diving in Siquijor

Do I need to know how to swim to try diving?

No. It is not mandatory to know how to swim in order to participate to the Discover Scuba Diving program. However, if you want to go further and get your Open Water certification, then you will need to know how to swim.

Can I see turtles during a try dive?

Yes. Siquijor has an important population of resident sea turtles and it is very common to see them during the dives.

How long is the activity?

– 2 to 3 hours if you do one dive.
– 4 to 5 hours if you do two dives.

When is the best time to dive around Siquijor?

While it is possible to dive all year round in good conditions, best weather is usually from January to June with water temperature ranging from 26 to 28 degrees.
From June to December, there is a higher chance of rain, but diving conditions remain unchanged. Water temperature range from 28 to 30 degrees.
Underwater visibility is usually good all year round.

What is the difference between Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water ?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving, as the name suggest is a underwater discovery. Through this experience, you will get to know what diving is about, experiment new sensations and see what is hiding below the surface.
At the end of this program, you won’t get any certification. The next time you will want to dive again, you will have to do an other Discover Scuba Diving or go for a certification training.
The PADI Open Water Diver is the first level of diving certification. It is a complete training, often in 3 days, during which you will learn everything you need to know to become a certified diver. You will learn ho to set up your dive equipment, how to deal with your buoyancy, how to react to different underwater emergencies and how to evolve as a buddy team underwater.
At the end of the training, you will get a worldwide recognized certification.

Can I enroll in a PADI certification after the try dive?

Yes. If you like your first dive and want to go for the Open Water Diver certification, it can be part of your training as long as you continue with us. The dive from your Discover Scuba Diving will then count as the first dive of your Open Water Diver training.
